DESCRIPTION:The Symposium “Sag Harbor in the Revolution” brings scholars and historians together for a series of presentations on the British occupation of Long Island – from 1776 until 1783 – a major turning point in the history of Sag Harbor. Little-known facts about the “Battle of Sag Harbor\,” the evacuation of residents to Connecticut\, and how the village recovered as the economic center of the East End will be explored. SUMMARY:History Beneath Our Feet
DESCRIPTION:Sag Harbor was occupied by the British for 7 years during the revolution and they built a fort\, known as a redoubt\, on a hill that happens to be the view from a window the Randy Croxton’s house. Croxton has studied that hill for years with a burning desire to prove\, in fact\, that the fort was there\, and it has been proven. Randy will take you through his journey from hypothesis to conjecture to fact – proving that there truly is history beneath our feet.

SUMMARY:Reinterpretation of the Shingle Style Architecture of the Maycroft Estate
DESCRIPTION:“Occasionally a project will challenge every principle an architect holds dear. Originally built in 1885\, the Maycroft estate in 2004 was neither salvageable nor restorable. Though listed on the National Register\, Maycroft’s historical importance resided in its silhouette on the horizon of Sag Harbor Village: an image engrained in the minds of an entire community. So\, when other architects recommended demolition\, Merrell Soule Architects proposed a different approach\, one that later came to be understood as Reinterpretation.
