Sag Harbor in the Revolution

Thirteen authors, all distinguished historians or specialists in their fields, have been brought together to contribute new research on the subject of Sag Harbor’s role in the American Revolution.

Have you heard of the Battle of Sag Harbor, the heroic raid on the British fort that still lies beneath our feet in the Old Burying Ground? Or of the mass exodus to Connecticut from Sag Harbor in September 1776, when local residents escaped the British occupation? Or do you know how our village rebuilt its economy after the Revolutionary War? These and many other questions will be answered in “Sag Harbor in the Revolution,” a book that the Museum is publishing next year to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Please help to support this richly-illustrated, 200-plus page hardcover book by becoming a contributor, before Friday December 19th, at one of the following levels: $100 Donor, $250 Sponsor, $1,000 Patron. Your generous donation will be acknowledged in the publication and at an exclusive, donors-only book-signing event in April next year.

Our Mission

To promote and encourage public education and appreciation of the history of the Village of Sag Harbor, and to foster and otherwise work for the preservation of its historic buildings, sites, and material culture. The Museum maintains an historic building, known as the Annie Cooper Boyd House, dating from 1760, which is one of the oldest buildings in Sag Harbor, and the Whaleboat Shop, which is a reconstruction and representation of Annieโ€™s fatherโ€™s whaleboat shop.

Preservation

The theme that underscores our mission is preservationโ€”preservation of Sag Harbor’s buildings, objects, stories, and memories as documented in diaries, ledgers, letters, costumes, artwork, tools and other artifacts. In Sag Harbor, we are fortunate to also have an historic district of beautiful period buildings which are listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Your support

We believe in and work toward preserving and protecting all of Sag Harborโ€™s history for the future. We cannot do this work without your support. Please consider donating to participate in our preservation efforts. A donation of any amount will help.

The Sag Harbor Historical Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are fully tax-deductible and will support our mission to preserve and protect the history of Sag Harbor.
