Captain Cliff Clark will share with us, the unique, 200+ year history of the South Ferry, which travels between North Haven, on the South Fork and the southern tip of Shelter Island, and links travelers to Connecticut and New England, as well as New York and destinations beyond.
Captain Clark is part of the fifth generation of the Clark family to run the business. “According the the South Ferry Crew Book, the company was established sometime during the late 1700s more than likely at the close of the Revolutionary War, when Samual G. Clark came across the Long Island Sound from Connecticut into Shelter Island.” The “South Ferry designates itself as the oldest family-owned ferry company in the U.S.” dating to 1793, starting as “a rowboat that would aid boatless travelers to navigate between … [Shelter Island] and what was then known as Hog Neck (now North Haven).” **
With a history well over 200 years in the making, Captain Clark will have generations of stories to share this Sunday afternoon. Join us, admission is free.
