“One Shot Fired…”

Battle of Sag Harbor
The Battle of Sag Harbor – Painted by Rafaella Gurtler

One of Long Island’s little known historical facts is that a Revolutionary War era battle was fought and won in Sag Harbor in May 1777. Known as The Battle of Sag Harbor, the raid on British positions in Sag Harbor was led by Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs, so it is also known as Meigs Raid. Whaleboats were rowed across Long Island Sound and portaged across the North Fork, ultimately landing outside of the village of Sag Harbor. Meigs divided his force sending some to storm the British redoubt built where the Old Burying Ground is today and some to Long Wharf. Attacks were conducted in silence with fixed bayonets and only one shot was fired. The fort was captured, the British fleet was burned to the waterline, 6 loyalists were killed, and 90 were captured, while the patriots suffered no casualties.
